Levi Stauss, a Bavarian immigrant, founded a dry goods company in San Francisco in 1853 at the height of the California Gold Rush. In the process, he recognized a critical need for hard-working people: durable clothing. Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis combined denim and copper rivet backing to create the first overalls in 1873.
